「空間と人」では、どんな場所でどんな人々がどのように暮らしているのか、ということを「何をするか」に焦点を当てて、お伝えします。第3週は、トルコ。古くからの交通の要衝にして、東西の結節点であるこの地には、様々な文化が折り重なり、ときに整然と、ときに混沌として共存しながら、昇華された独自の文化が花開いています。

街で出会う人々から、とかく親日的な空気を感じるトルコ。「親日」の正体はまた日を改めてお伝えするのですが、トルコと日本をつなぐ共通点は、くらしの中にもありました。それが本日のキーワードである、「清潔」。世界的にきれい好きで知られる日本人ですが、トルコの人々は時に、彼らが日本人と同じか、時としてそれ以上にきれい好きに見えることがあります。トルコにおいて、清潔さとはなんなのか。一見似ているようで、実はけっこう異なる、そのくらしをお伝えします。  

In our report "Space and people," we report where and how pepople live focusing on what they DO. The 3rd week's place is Turkey. This place has been one of the most important point of traffic in the world. It means, so many different cultures are mixed here. They became an original and unique turkish culture.

So many Turkish people seems to be pro-Japanese. There is a common point between the two countries. It is today's topic "cleanliness." Japanese people are well-known for their custom to like cleanliness, but turkish people sometimes like it more. How they keep it? 

身体を清めて礼拝を

包る者よ、立ち上って警告しなさい。
あなたの主を讃えなさい。
またあなたの衣を清潔に保ちなさい。
不浄を避けなさい。

イスラムの教典コーランでは、じつは清潔さを保つことを説いています。トルコの人々における清潔好きの原点は、イスラム教にあるのです。

イスラム教が定める毎日5回の礼拝（サラート）。その前には「ウドゥー」と呼ばれる清めの儀式が必要です。日本の神社、寺院でも清めの水で口や手をすすぐ、手水の習慣がありますが、イスラムの清めは、もっと厳密。モスクの前には必ず、時には公衆トイレの中にまで、ウドゥーのための洗い場があって、洗うべき体の部位、洗い方まで決まっています。気をつけなければいけないのは、ウドゥーの後、参拝までは居眠りをしたり、セックスをしたりしないこと。トイレに行ったりうっかりおならを漏らしても、せっかくのウドゥーは無効になって、やり直さなければなりません。

And keep away from Ar-Rujz (the idols)!

Coran, the scripture of Islam, says that you have to keep cleanliness. It is the reason why Turkish people like it clean.

Muslims pray 5 times in a day. It is called "Salat." They have to do "Wudu," purifying your body, before they pray. Japanese people also wash their hands and mouths before they pray in shrines and temples but Islamic regulation is far more strict. Washing places for Wudu are always located in front of mosques and even in public lavatories and It is strictly fixed which part to wash and how to do. Once you do Wudu, you can not nap, do sex, go to lavatory and even pass gas until you finish praying, or you have to do Wudu again.

風呂好きトルコ

とはいっても、イスラム教国のなかでもっとも穏健で、世俗化しているのがトルコ。取材の過程で出会ったトルコの若者は、ウドゥーはもちろん、一日5回の礼拝ですら「心のなかで祈っているよ」なんて言って、逃れてしまう人が大半でした。

しかし、モスクの洗い場をながめていて思い至るのは、トルコにはトルコ風呂（ハマム）があるということ。ハマムはもともとローマ帝国の首都だったイスタンブール（コンスタンティノープル）に残っていたローマ帝国時代の蒸し風呂。清潔であることを大切にするイスラム教徒がその地を占領してハマム文化が生まれたといいます。それは結婚式や割礼式などもおこなわれる一種の社交場としても機能していて、20年ほど前までは、ことあるたびに一家でハマムに出かけたとか。

現代のトルコでは、集合住宅にもバスタブ抜きの、コンパクトなシャワー室がすっかり普及しています。もちろん清潔好きなトルコの人々、シャワーを毎日気軽に浴びられるのはうれしいこと。でも、今回お話を伺った年配のトルコの方は、ハマムに通った時代を懐かしんでいる様子で、その横顔を眺めていたら、「ALWAYS三丁目の夕日」がダブってみえました。

Bathing

In spite of the strict regulations, most of turkish young people escape from Wudu and even 5 times prayer saying "I pray just only in my heart." Turkey is one of the most moderate and secularized Muslim Countries.

However, there are still a lot of "Hamam," the Turkish public bathhouse. Originally, they came from Roman empire. They left Roman bathhouses In Constantinople(Istanbul) and after occupation Muslims arranged them into Islamic style. It is not just a bathing place, but a kind of social meeting place where wedding and circumcision ceremonies are held. The habit of visiting there with all the members of their families had been existed until only 20 years ago.

At present, they have their own shower rooms in their house. It is of course good thing for the people who really like to keep cleanliness, but old people sometimes look back and miss the days they went to Hamam.

髭のばしても下の毛は

トルコで驚くことの一つは、ドラッグストアで見かける、大量の髭剃りグッズ。髭剃り用のシェービングクリームはもちろん、日本では床屋くらいでしかお目にかかれない、泡立てた石鹸を顔に塗るためのふさふさとした刷毛までも、種類がずいぶん豊富です。その理由は、イスラム教では伝統的に、立派な髭を蓄えていることは成熟した男性の証。だから髭の手入れのためのグッズも豊富…というのは半分当たっている説明ですが、半分だけ。実は清潔を重んじるトルコでは、脇毛や下の毛も剃ることが当たり前です。

ムスリムは少なくとも1日一回はシャワーを浴び、体をきれいにしておく必要があります。
歯磨きを習慣づけ、定期的に爪を切り、わきの下などの毛もそっておく必要があるのです。

東京ジャーミイ金曜日のホタバ 2010年5月14日 清潔さ

東京ジャーミイは東京渋谷区神宮前にある、トルコ共和国在東京大使館に所属するモスク。この文書では「わきの下など」とあるだけで、さすがに下の毛、陰毛という表現は出てきませんが、大使館所属の由緒あるモスクの発行する文書。これでも踏み込んだ記述といえるでしょう。

トルコや他のいくつかのイスラム教国以外でも、アメリカや西欧の一部ではファッション・身だしなみの一環として下の毛を剃る文化がありますが、トルコにおいてはあくまでも「清潔のため」。男性は髭を整え、脇の毛と下の毛はきれいに剃ること。女性は髪の毛以外の毛はすべてツルツルにするのがトルコ流の身だしなみ。上述のハマムでもその昔から現代にいたるまで、剃毛・脱毛サービスが人気だそうです。

Mustache, hair

Wearing a great mustache is the proof of a grown-up and matured man in the Islamic way. This is one reason why they sell so many kind of shaving items, but there is the other reason. Shaving even underarm hair and pubic hair is ordinary way here.You will be surprised to see that so many equipments for shaving are sold in the pharmacies in Turkey. Not only items like shaving lotions but also special brushes to spread bubbles on your face are sold.

Muslims should take a shower at least once in a day to keep the bodies clean. They also have to brush their teeth and shave underarm hair and so on habitually.

Tokyo Camii

Tokyo Camii, a Mosque in Tokyo belonging to the embassy of Turkey in Japan says like this. This shows the fact that shaving is really important thing for them. In U.S. and western countries, of course, they have a habit to shave their pubic hair, but it is just for fashion.

裸足で歩けるきれいな室内

以前の記事で、「中国では近年、室内で靴を脱ぐ習慣が広がっている」とお伝えしましたが、トルコに来てみて驚きました。なんとこの国でも、人は玄関で靴を脱ぐではありませんか。入り口のドア付近に靴を脱ぐことも、玄関の境目がハッキリしないことも中国同様。あらためて調べてみると、中国に限らず西欧やアメリカでも近年、清潔さへの欲求が高まりから、家の中では靴を脱ぐ、または室内履きに履き替える習慣が広まっている模様です。

しかしトルコをはじめとする中東諸国で靴を脱ぐ習慣は、剃毛同様、近年広まった習慣というわけではなく、イスラム教に端を発しています。礼拝の前にはウドゥーで欠かさず体を清めるほどなので、もちろんモスクの中は土足禁止。ひんやりした大理石や、ふかふかのトルコ絨毯の上を裸足で歩けば、まるでお寺で廊下や畳を歩くように気持よく、心が鎮まっていくのを感じます。

モスクと同様、家の中はいつもきれいに保ち、客をよく招くのがトルコの習慣。近年の住宅では、伝統的な手織りのトルコ絨毯は、モダンで、シンプルな機械織りの絨毯にとって代わられつつありますが、それにしても足元には、絨毯やキリムが欠かせない、というわけです。

Clean enough to walk with bare feet

As we mentioned the articles about China, Chinese people are changing their custom to taking off their shoes when they enter in their house. Surprisingly, same thing happened in Turkey. They take their shoes off at the entrance but it is really difficult to recognize where to take off. It is also same as in China. Actually, this custom is spreading all around the world because they have become to be eager to keep cleanliness.

However, the custom in Muslim countries was not born recently. It came from Islam. In the Mosques, you should remove your shoes before entering. Walking on the marble floor and the carpets with bare foot is very comfortable and it makes you relaxed.

Also in their houses, they always keep them clean and like to welcome guests. They often spread soft handmade carpets on the floor, though they are becoming to use modern and simple machine-made ones.

まとめ

トルコを旅していると、高速バスの中や公衆トイレで、レモンの香りがするアルコール水をシュッと一吹きしてくれることも。これは、コロンヤと呼ばれるトルコの生活必需品で、気分転換と共に、手を清潔にするためにも使われるそう。毎日の礼拝はサボってもよく、お酒を飲んでもよく、一見とてもゆるやかなイスラム教国トルコですが、ことほどさように、イスラム教の「清め」は生活のなかに根付いているのです。

ところで、トルコでは日本の女性が旅しているのをよく目にしました。聞けばトルコ人男性と出会って恋に落ちたり、結婚する女性も少なくないとか。清潔好きのトルコ人と日本人、文化の違いはもちろん少なくはないけれど、もしかしたらカップルとしても、けっこう相性がいいのかもしれません。

In turkey, they often give you alcohol water with lemon flavor in midnight buses and public lavatories. This "Kolonya(Turkish cologne)" is one of necessaries for their life. It is for cleanliness and a change as well. The importance of purifying came from Islam is recognized in such way, although they often skip praying and drink.

By the way, there were many Japanese women traveling in Turey. Some fall in love with turkish guy and get married. Maybe the combination is good because both country has a custum to keep cleanliness.
