When buying baby essentials, list may be overwhelming and there are too many types of baby underwear in Japan you might get confused. For those feeling like you are lost, we recommend picking up this convertible gown. It is one of the most useful baby clothes you can use from newborn. Changing diapers during the neonatal period is more frequent than you imagine (more than 10 times a day), it is quite a work to just undress bottom each time especially at night. In such a case, convertible gown can be worn as a dress, in a cylinder shape, at first so you do not need to unbutton each time, and as they get older and have leg movements, you can use snap buttons into pants shape so babies can freely move.
Newborn baby's skin is about half the size of an adult and it is 0.1 mm thin. It is very delicate and sensitive. Because it directly touches your baby 's skin, you want to
choose underwear that you can be sure of. Ikuji Kobo's "Hanging knit" fabric has fine
stretch to it and the texture is smooth and moist. Organic cotton, great absorption and fast drying property, gently wraps baby's body in any climate comfortably. The design is simple and elegant. You can have another layer underneath for added warmth and comfort. This can be a cute outfit for coming home or 100th day celebration shrine visit or everyday wear.
Using rare traditional material, "hanging knit"
It is a traditional material produced using a hanging knitting machine which is said to have entered Japan in the Taisho Period (dated 1912 to 1926). Compared to fabrics produced with modern sinker knitting machines, they are slowly produced over 15 to 20 times more to knit the same length. By doing so, the process does not damage thread itself and create fabric that has great stretchability and softness. Wrap your baby gently with a fine fabric that has plenty of air. Currently hanging knit production can be only found in Wakayama Prefecture, and at Ikuji Kobo, they specially requested to use organic cotton. This fabric's great stretchability makes a perfect material when wrapping baby's bodies and becomes like a "second skin" to protect baby's delicate skin.
Made in Japan
Ikuji Kobo products are made in Japan from sourcing cotton to thread to sewing. With a help of factories using Japanese traditional skills that are few left these days, Ikuji Kobo has been producing beautiful yet highly functional baby garments using organic materials.

This convertible gown is a great invention in my opinion! In many Japanese hospitals and birth centers, babies often wear a dress and short underwear underneath, but I thought that mid-length underwear and this convertible gown are more convenient combination because short underwear rises up and baby's belly is exposed and mid-length one would cover their precious belly better and convertible gown can be worn for many months. So for NEST for baby, we are introducing those two items. For baby's delicate and transparent skin, parents naturally wish to use anything gentle and organic cotton is a great choice. This convertible gown is simple and elegant and it would make your baby's natural cuteness compelling! It is also recommended for baby shower gifts and welcoming baby gift with a set of organic cotton rattles by Ikuji Kobo♪. |
Moe was wearing the same convertible gown from newborn until about 5 months old so definitely it was one of the best money spent on baby clothes. I got some short kimono wrap style underwear, a few pieces of kimono gown, and a few convertible gowns. It is easy to wear because it is front opening, and since the crotch part is a snap button, diaper change was also a breeze. In the early days when you don't really take baby outside much, if you have one or two of this convertible gown, that would be enough, I think. Most of photos from this time, Moe is always in the same convertible gowns. That's how much I used! |
